Hello All,

The committee for 2010-2011 has been selected! ANd with this new committee there are many many new and exciting things going on! I know a few of you have emailed the club asking about sailing opportunities and not got much response but thats all about to change. Our new Club Captain Tim is a man with a plan and that plan is to get more people in boats!

As of Sept 2010 we will be running beginners courses, intermediates courses, team racing and yachting - hopefully that’s pricked up a few ears. Details are being finalised because we have to sail at West Kirby SC and Liverpool YC so in negotiations with these clubs, but as soon as we can finalise plans the sooner we can get you on the water.

In the meantime, come along to the sailing socials, Chris our social secretary will accept any challenge of one on one and he’ll drink you under the table to show you that tus sailors know how to hold our rum! ALl details of socials will be posted on our website sailing.man.ac.uk and should be on the facebook group as well. If you’re interested in sailing in the new year come down and meet the other members!

We will post when we have more details of what’s going on, just to keep you in the loop, but don’t hesitate to give us an email…

Chrisite Cup 2010

Manchester Rule The Waves in Christie Cup Victory!

Racing kicked off in West Kirby for the Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool sailing teams in a nice force 2-3. The first best-of-three was between Manchester and Liverpool. Manchester dominated the start line and after a good first beat were 1st, 2nd and 6th at the top mark, which they kept to the end to win the first race (10 or less points wins). The second race followed pretty much the same pattern leaving Manchester in a strong position. Next round was between Leeds and Liverpool, which began with a flying start from the port-hand Liverpool boat. This led to some pretty intense battles, especially down the run, but in the end Leeds managed to get through to 1st and 3rd, so won the first race. The second saw the same Liverpool boat fly off the port end in another cracking start, but with her two team mates pushed back into last and second to last, by some leeward mark trapping, unfortunately a win for her was not a win for the team. So after winning 2 out of 3 against Liverpool, it was now up to Leeds to fight it out against Manchester for the title. In the first race Leeds got off to a good start and were 1st, 3rd and 5th around the top mark, however the first 3 boats all sailed low of the next mark, so Manchester’s 4th place boat sailed over the top and into 1st. This led to some intensive gybing duels down the run and the battles continued to the last beat. With two Manchester boats and two Leeds boats locked in battle up the left hand side of the beat, the remaining two boats sailed up the right hand side in clear breeze to get back in the mix. This led to a very close finish, with Manchester just managing to squeeze into 2nd, 3rd and 5th and take the first race. In the second race, the close battle continued, but a cracking final beat led Manchester to a 1st and 3rd at the finish. The last Manchester boat did a few fouls so was still taking penalty spins 5 minutes after the race had finished! Fortunately it didn’t matter and Manchester managed to win Christie Cup undefeated!

BUSA Qualifiers 2010

Well done to the team, who had a trying weekend in light and shifty airs, valiant effort although not quite the biscuit! Coming 6th overall and a place to BUSA pllayoffs in March is still a job well done and we’d better go show these Southern teams how it’s done. Attached is the match report for the weekend…

BUCS Yachting

Hey all,

Well there was a bit of interest but not lots so unfortunately we won’t be able to put in a team this year. The plan though is to sort out a team for next year so will be taking down details at freshers fair in sept. In the meantime there are a couple fo yachts that I sail on in Wales and Liverpool and they usually need crew so if you’re interested in having a sail and a practice then email me with your details, includes current team racing team members, so if we’re short I can let you know.

Until then come down to the sailing socials and meet the rest of the team and we’ll get up and running for next year.

BUCS Yachting 2010

Hi All,

Hope everyone is feeling good and enjoying the last couple of weeks of uni before proper christmas festivities begin!

I’m emailing y’all to see if there is any interest in putting in a team for the BUCS Ychting Nationals which is held in easter 2010 (don’t worry doesn’t clash with BUSA Team racing). Because it is going to cost a lot of money I’d like to apply to the AU for the money so I need to approach them with a proposal including a team with some decent experience that could potentially do alright. If we manage to do this then it’ll provide a basis for starting a yacht section of the sailing club for next year, which will help expand and promote the club.

So for the time being if you are interested then please email me directly misspennyj@hotmail.com and give me a brief description of your yacht/racing experience. The team consists of 9 people, 2 of whicch must be girls, so places are limited. If everyone could send me their info before January then I will have an idea as to whether this plan can go ahead.

If you want more details on theevent then go to http://www.busa.co.uk/calendar.php?o=18  and it’s the event on the 291h March
Cheers to all,

Forward to anyone you think is appropriate to apply but isn’t on the mailing list,

Penny
